A Century In Captivity

Join Denis Caron, John Mills, and MCHS Executive Director Dr. Jesse Nasta at Wesleyan RJ Julia Bookstore for a book talk celebrating the release of their new edition of A Century in Captivity (Wesleyan University Press). This powerful work traces the life of Prince Mortimer, an enslaved Middletown man who was imprisoned at Connecticut’s notorious Old Newgate Prison in 1811 at age 87 and lived to be 110. His extraordinary story exposes the deep intersection between New England slavery and the early American prison system.
