The MCHS’ Saving of Historic St. John Parochial School Building Moves Forward

In late-2024, the Middlesex County Historical Society’s Historic Preservation Committee, headed by Renée Tribert, intervened to save the historic St. John Parochial School Building from likely demolition.

Adaptive reuse of this landmark is about to move forward. On September 22, Parker Benjamin Real Estate Services announced that it had purchased the St. John school building from the Diocese of Norwich. Now that Parker Benjamin has site control, it can get started on its project, named Keely’s Crossing, of rehabilitating the building for residential use. The availability of state and federal historic incentives will ensure that the distinctive character of the Victorian brick and brownstone structure is preserved.

MCHS’s Historic Preservation Committee served as the catalyst for this outcome.

Built in 1887-89, the school building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
