On May 9, audiences experienced a joyful journey through the musical innovations of the post-Civil War era (1865–1915) in celebration of our nation’s 250th anniversary. This commemorative performance explored the rich evolution of American classical, jazz, and popular song. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Liberty Bank for their generous sponsorship of this event in support of the Middlesex County Historical Society.
To dive deeper into the history behind the music, we are pleased to share the insightful essay read at the event by concert co-producer Richard J. Friswell, MEd, MPhil—Cultural Historian and Wesleyan Visiting Scholar—exploring America’s dynamic musical traditions following the Civil War. Please read it here.
